About me

With more than 36 years of dedicated service in education, Mrs. Lopez brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and a deep commitment to supporting students, families, and staff. Her career in education began as an Instructional Aide and District Office Clerk III, providing an important foundation in student support and school operations.

Over the course of her career, Olga has served as a Comprehensive Student Support Coordinator, English Teacher, Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA) Coordinator, and Counselor.  As an educational leader, Mrs. Lopez has served as Assistant Principal of Activities, Assistant Principal of Student Support Services, and Assistant Principal of Instruction. Each position has expanded her leadership experience and strengthened her ability to support students' academic, social, and personal growth while collaborating with parents, teachers, and staff.

Throughout her career, Mrs. Lopez has remained committed to building strong relationships, creating supportive and inclusive school communities, and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed. This diverse range of experiences provides a strong foundation for serving and supporting the entire school community.

Assistant Principal:

Dr. Covey joins South El Monte High School with more than 20 years of experience in public education, including 16 years as a high school history teacher and more than seven years in educational administration. Throughout his career, Dr. Covey has embraced a wide range of educational experiences that have deepened his understanding of curriculum and instruction, collaboration, and educational equity.

Degrees and Certifications:

Dr. Covey holds a B.A. in Social Science and an M.A. in History from California State University, Los Angeles, as well as a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Azusa Pacific University.

With nearly 20 years of teaching experience spanning elementary through college-level instruction, Ms. Tellez has served in both Special Education and General Education roles. Her extensive experience includes serving as department chair, mentor teacher, curriculum pilot lead, and active collaborator within educational communities. Known for her leadership, dedication to equity, and strong advocacy for students, she brings a holistic and inclusive approach to education. A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Ms. Tellez holds a B.A. in Child Development and Special Education, as well as a Master’s in Education.

Dr. Ortiz brings eight years of high school counseling experience, providing students with comprehensive personal/social, academic, and career planning support. His counseling experience includes helping students develop college and postsecondary plans, creating four-year high school graduation plans, and supporting students with disabilities in achieving academic and personal success. In addition, Dr. Ortiz has four years of administrative leadership experience focused on supporting students, staff, and school-wide programs. His leadership responsibilities have included leading the WASC accreditation process, School Site Safety initiatives, Advanced Placement Testing, School Activities, and, most recently, Student Services.
