Assistant Principal:
Dr. Covey joins South El Monte High School with more than 20 years of experience in public education, including 16 years as a high school history teacher and more than seven years in educational administration. Throughout his career, Dr. Covey has embraced a wide range of educational experiences that have deepened his understanding of curriculum and instruction, collaboration, and educational equity.
Degrees and Certifications:
Dr. Covey holds a B.A. in Social Science and an M.A. in History from California State University, Los Angeles, as well as a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership from Azusa Pacific University.
With nearly 20 years of teaching experience spanning elementary through college-level instruction, Ms. Tellez has served in both Special Education and General Education roles. Her extensive experience includes serving as department chair, mentor teacher, curriculum pilot lead, and active collaborator within educational communities. Known for her leadership, dedication to equity, and strong advocacy for students, she brings a holistic and inclusive approach to education. A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Ms. Tellez holds a B.A. in Child Development and Special Education, as well as a Master’s in Education.
Dr. Ortiz brings eight years of high school counseling experience, providing students with comprehensive personal/social, academic, and career planning support. His counseling experience includes helping students develop college and postsecondary plans, creating four-year high school graduation plans, and supporting students with disabilities in achieving academic and personal success. In addition, Dr. Ortiz has four years of administrative leadership experience focused on supporting students, staff, and school-wide programs. His leadership responsibilities have included leading the WASC accreditation process, School Site Safety initiatives, Advanced Placement Testing, School Activities, and, most recently, Student Services.
